Allons,
enfants de la Patrie!. 16 to 22 April
2007
The French revolution introduced the
tri-colour flag, which has its own colourful
history. Blue, graced by a gold fleur-de-lis,
represented a royal colour of loyalty
and was originally the colour of the flag
flown at Charlemagne's coronation. Red
represented the kingdom, and white stood
for the colour of the French navy. The
Revolution also established the rooster
as the representation of the nation's
identity. Today it is featured on stamps
and coins in France. The inspiring "La
Marseillaise," now the French national
anthem, was composed in 1792 and later
adopted as a marching song of the Revolution.
Happy Birthday, France |
